Peace Summit

Russia Declines Invitation to Ukrainian-Promoted Peace Summit, Citing Ultimatum Concerns

Moscow, September 22, 2024 — The Europe Today: Russia has announced it will not participate in the proposed second “peace summit” organized by Ukraine later this year. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed strong objections to the event, asserting that it would be grounded in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s so-called “peace formula,” now rebranded as his “Victory Plan.” Zakharova characterized the summit as an attempt to impose an ultimatum on Moscow.

During a press conference in Kiev on Friday, President Zelensky urged Western nations to provide maximum support to Ukraine to bring the ongoing conflict to a definitive conclusion in 2024. He previously indicated a desire for Russia to be included in the peace discussions, given widespread international support for this approach.

However, Zakharova dismissed this notion, labeling the summit a “fraud by the Anglo-Saxons and their Ukrainian puppets.” She emphasized that Russia remains open to a diplomatic resolution but is only willing to consider “really serious proposals” that reflect the current situation on the ground.

Zakharova reiterated the conditions outlined by President Vladimir Putin in June, stating that Moscow would commence negotiations once Ukraine begins withdrawing its troops from the Donbass region, as well as from the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, while committing to neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.
