Brasilia, November 21, 2024 — The Europe Today: In a landmark decision, China and Brazil have agreed to deepen their bilateral ties and work toward a “community with a shared future” aimed at fostering a more just world and a sustainable planet. The announcement was made following a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during Xi’s state visit to Brazil after attending the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
President Xi praised the 50-year relationship between the two nations, emphasizing that their partnership is rooted in mutual respect, amity, and shared benefits. He highlighted Brazil’s pivotal role as the first country in Latin America to establish both a strategic and comprehensive strategic partnership with China.
“The China-Brazil relationship is at its best in history,” Xi remarked, noting that the partnership not only enhances the well-being of their citizens but also strengthens the Global South and contributes significantly to global peace and stability.
Elevating Cooperation and Aligning Development Strategies
China and Brazil have decided to align the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with Brazil’s national development strategies, including the New Growth Acceleration Program and Routes for South American Integration. President Xi described this alignment as a historic milestone that underscores the global and strategic importance of their ties.
The two countries aim to enhance collaboration in key areas such as infrastructure, trade, finance, science and technology, clean energy, and environmental protection. Cooperation in agricultural science, space technology, and poverty alleviation were also identified as priorities.
China expressed its support for Brazil’s Fome Zero (Zero Hunger) initiative and committed to strengthening collaboration on poverty reduction.
Global Governance and Multilateral Cooperation
Both leaders emphasized the importance of multilateralism and equitable global governance. President Xi affirmed China’s support for Brazil’s upcoming presidency of BRICS, while President Lula thanked China for its backing of Brazil’s G20 presidency.
The two countries also issued a six-point consensus on the political resolution of the Ukraine crisis and launched a “Friends of Peace” group alongside other Global South nations. They reiterated their shared commitment to peaceful solutions for global conflicts, including the Gaza crisis, and advocated for implementing the two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian issue.
Building a Shared Future
President Lula described China as Brazil’s most important strategic partner, highlighting the transformative impact of Chinese investments in Brazil’s economic and social development. He also expressed optimism about advancing the China-Brazil relationship to achieve a shared vision of global fairness and sustainable progress.
The leaders pledged to deepen people-to-people exchanges, particularly in culture, education, and youth engagement, to strengthen the foundation of their partnership.
“China and Brazil are united in their resolve to build a better world defined by cooperation over confrontation and justice over hegemony,” Xi stated.
