President Joe Biden Issues Pardon for Son Hunter Amid Legal Battles

Washington, D.C., December 02, 2024 – The Europe Today: On Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced that he had granted a full pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who has been facing sentencing for two criminal cases related to tax evasion and the purchase of a firearm.

In a statement, President Biden expressed his belief that Hunter’s legal challenges were politically motivated. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” he stated, calling the legal proceedings against his son “a miscarriage of justice.”

Earlier this year, Hunter Biden was convicted of felony charges related to lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm. He also pleaded guilty to charges in a separate case involving tax evasion. The pardon marks a shift in Biden’s previous stance, where he had consistently stated that he would not interfere with his son’s legal matters.

“The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” President Biden added. “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process.”

The pardon also comes amid a legal pause in the criminal cases of President-elect Donald Trump, whose trials have faced challenges due to a recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, which may shield him from jail time despite his landmark conviction for falsifying business records in May.

Despite his earlier pledge of non-intervention, President Biden’s decision to pardon his son has sparked significant political debate, with critics accusing him of undermining the legal process for personal reasons. However, the President maintained that the action was taken in the pursuit of justice, asserting that Hunter’s prosecution was the result of political influence rather than legitimate legal concerns.
