Cupertino, July 12, 2026 – The Europe Today: Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and two former Apple employees, alleging the misappropriation of confidential trade secrets in a case that could have significant implications for the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence and consumer hardware industries.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses OpenAI of orchestrating a coordinated effort to obtain Apple’s proprietary information through former employees and supplier relationships to accelerate the development of its consumer hardware initiatives.
According to the complaint, former Apple employees Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan improperly retained and accessed confidential company information before and after joining OpenAI. Apple alleges that Liu downloaded sensitive files from Apple systems after leaving the company, while Tan shared proprietary supplier information and encouraged other Apple employees to bring confidential materials to interviews with OpenAI.
Apple has named OpenAI, its affiliated entities, and the recently acquired io Products as defendants, claiming the alleged actions were intended to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the development of AI-powered consumer devices. The company maintains that while employee mobility is common in the technology sector, the unauthorized use of trade secrets is unlawful and unacceptable.
OpenAI has denied Apple’s allegations, rejecting claims that it engaged in the theft or misuse of Apple’s confidential information. The company is expected to contest the lawsuit as the case proceeds through the U.S. courts.
The legal dispute comes amid intensifying competition between major technology companies to develop next-generation AI-enabled hardware. Industry analysts say the outcome of the case could influence future legal standards governing employee mobility, protection of intellectual property, and competition in the emerging AI hardware market.
