President-elect Donald Trump Nominates Kevin Marino Cabrera as U.S. Ambassador to Panama

Washington, D.C., December 26, 2024 – The Europe Today: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday his nomination of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera to serve as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama.

“I am pleased to announce that Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.

Describing Cabrera as “a fierce fighter for America First principles,” Trump highlighted his nominee’s role in driving economic growth and fostering international partnerships. “Few understand Latin American politics as well as Kevin — He will do a FANTASTIC job representing our Nation’s interests in Panama!” Trump declared.

Cabrera, who served as Florida state director for Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign and was a member of the Republican National Committee (RNC) Platform Committee, brings a wealth of political and diplomatic experience to the role.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions over the Panama Canal, with Trump reiterating his position on reasserting U.S. control over the waterway. The canal, which was administered by the United States until its handover to Panama in 1999, has been a focal point of Trump’s recent statements.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Chinese soldiers of illegally operating within the canal zone and claimed the United States is investing billions in repairs without retaining influence over its administration. Trump criticized Panama for “ripping us off on the Panama Canal, far beyond their wildest dreams.”

However, Panama’s President, Jose Raul Mulino, countered these assertions, emphasizing that China has no influence over the canal’s operations. The canal, he stated, remains under the exclusive jurisdiction of Panama.

Cabrera’s nomination reflects Trump’s intent to strengthen U.S. influence in Central America and ensure American interests are prioritized in the region. Pending confirmation, Cabrera is set to navigate a complex diplomatic landscape as he assumes his new role.
