Washington D.C., April 15, 2026 – The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over her refusal to support military action against Iran, straining ties between two leaders previously seen as close allies.
In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Trump expressed disappointment with Meloni’s stance, saying, “I’m shocked at her. I thought she had courage, but I was wrong.” He further accused her of failing to support efforts to counter Iran’s nuclear ambitions and criticized Italy’s role within NATO.
The remarks came a day after Meloni condemned Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV, who has repeatedly called for an end to the conflict in the Middle East. Trump escalated his rhetoric, alleging that Italy’s position reflects indifference toward potential nuclear threats from Iran.
Despite their past alignment, Trump noted that he had not spoken with Meloni recently, adding that “she doesn’t help us with NATO” and accusing Europe more broadly of lacking willingness to defend strategic energy routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The comments triggered swift reactions across Italy’s political spectrum. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to Western unity, stressing that alliances must be based on “mutual loyalty, respect, and honesty.” He defended Meloni as a leader who “never shies away from saying what she thinks,” emphasizing that the government prioritizes Italy’s national interests.
Opposition leader Elly Schlein also condemned Trump’s remarks, calling them a “serious lack of respect.” Addressing parliament, she reiterated Italy’s constitutional stance against war, stating, “Our constitution is clear — Italy repudiates war.”
Meloni, who has led Italy since October 2022, has often positioned herself as a bridge between Washington and European capitals. However, Trump’s latest criticism underscores growing divisions over the handling of the Iran conflict and broader transatlantic security priorities.
