Kuala Lumpur, January 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Malaysian government has confirmed that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday during his official working visit to Malaysia.
This visit marks Prabowo’s inaugural trip to Malaysia as President of Indonesia. The two leaders are set to engage in discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation to further enhance ties between Indonesia and Malaysia.
According to Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Anwar will also host a luncheon in honor of President Prabowo during his visit.
The visit holds significance as Malaysia is set to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, and the two leaders are expected to discuss regional cooperation, the development of the ASEAN Community, and strategies to address global challenges.
The ministry highlighted that the visit underscores the strong and special relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia, with extensive cooperation across various sectors including economy, defense, security, and cultural exchange. In 2023, Indonesia became Malaysia’s seventh-largest global trade partner and third-largest within ASEAN, with a bilateral trade value of US$24.39 billion.
As of October 2024, trade between the two countries has continued to grow, reaching US$20.75 billion, slightly up from the US$20.69 billion recorded in the same period in 2023.
Prabowo had previously been scheduled to meet Anwar in Langkawi, Kedah, on December 23, 2024, following his visit to Egypt for the D-8 Summit in Cairo. However, due to illness, the meeting was postponed, with Anwar confirming the cancellation through social media.
