Islamabad, August 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Embassy of Ethiopia in Islamabad, in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), organized a tree plantation drive under Ethiopia’s flagship Green Legacy Initiative, reaffirming the shared commitment of Ethiopia and Pakistan to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, media representatives, civil society members, and citizens from various walks of life, who participated in the plantation campaign in solidarity with Ethiopia’s ambitious goal of planting 800 million seedlings in a single day.
Addressing the participants, Melaw Getachew, Chargé d’Affaires of the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad, highlighted the remarkable achievements of the Green Legacy Initiative launched by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. He noted that Ethiopia has already planted more than 48 billion seedlings under the flagship environmental programme.
“The purpose of today’s drive is to stand alongside our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia in their goal of planting 800 million seedlings today,” Getachew said, emphasizing the importance of collective international action in addressing climate change.
He further underscored Ethiopia’s growing global leadership in climate resilience, noting that Addis Ababa is set to host the COP32 United Nations Climate Change Conference, reflecting the country’s commitment to advancing global environmental cooperation.
Speaking on the occasion, Zafar Bakhtawari, Chairman of the Clean and Green Movement Islamabad and former President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), praised Ethiopia’s large-scale reforestation efforts and described the Green Legacy Initiative as an inspiring model for environmental protection.
“The Green Legacy Initiative is completely aligned with the shared goals of our own Clean and Green Movement here in Islamabad,” Bakhtawari said, stressing the need for united global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
The plantation drive highlighted the strengthening environmental partnership between Ethiopia and Pakistan and demonstrated the shared resolve of both countries to contribute to global climate action through afforestation, environmental conservation, and community engagement.
