Kristi Noem Confirmed as US Homeland Security Secretary

Washington, D.C., January 26, 2025 – The Europe Today: South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, who rose to national prominence during the coronavirus pandemic, was confirmed on Saturday as the Secretary of Homeland Security. The U.S. Senate approved her nomination with a 59-34 vote, making her the fourth confirmed member of President Donald Trump’s cabinet. Her confirmation followed closely behind Pete Hegseth’s approval as Secretary of Defense earlier in the day.

In her first statement as Homeland Security Secretary, Noem emphasized her commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the American people.

“The Trump Administration will once again empower our brave men and women in law enforcement to do their jobs and remove criminal aliens and illegal gangs from our country,” Secretary Noem declared. “We will fully equip our intelligence and law enforcement agencies to detect and prevent terror threats and will deliver rapid assistance and disaster relief to Americans in crisis.”

Noem thanked President Trump for entrusting her with the role and pledged to focus on securing the southern border and addressing longstanding issues within the U.S. immigration system.

During her Senate confirmation hearing, Noem described the southern border as “not secure” and vowed to bring significant changes.

“President Trump needs to achieve this mission because two-thirds of Americans support his immigration and border policies, including the majority of Hispanic Americans,” she stated. “I was the first governor to send National Guard troops to our southern border when Texas requested assistance during an unprecedented border crisis. As secretary, I will ensure that our extraordinary Border Patrol agents have the tools, resources, and support they need to carry out their mission.”

Secretary Noem’s leadership is expected to focus on bolstering border security, enhancing disaster response capabilities, and addressing pressing homeland security challenges. Her confirmation solidifies a key position in the Trump Administration as it advances its policy priorities.
