President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva Honor Khojaly Genocide Victims

Baku, February 26, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva paid tribute to the victims of the Khojaly genocide on Monday, marking the 33rd anniversary of the tragic event that remains one of the darkest chapters in 20th-century history.

The commemoration took place at the Khojaly Genocide Memorial in the Khatai district of Baku, where the head of state laid a wreath in solemn remembrance of those who lost their lives. President Aliyev stood in reverence, paying his respects to the victims of the massacre that unfolded in 1992.

First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva also participated in the ceremony, placing a floral tribute at the monument as a sign of deep respect for the memory of the genocide victims.

The Khojaly genocide, which took place on the night of February 25-26, 1992, resulted in the deaths of 613 Azerbaijani civilians, including women and children, during the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The annual remembrance event serves as a solemn occasion to honor the victims and reaffirm Azerbaijan’s commitment to ensuring historical justice.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, dignitaries, and members of the public, all gathered to commemorate the lives lost and reflect on the enduring impact of the tragedy.
