Governor McMaster Declares State of Emergency as Over 175 Wildfires Burn Across South Carolina

South Carolina, March 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has declared a State of Emergency in response to the ongoing wildfire crisis, as more than 175 fires continue to burn across the state, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds.

According to the Governor’s office, the fires have been exacerbated by unusually dry weather and gusty winds. The National Weather Service has predicted relief as a cold front moves through the Southeast U.S., expected to bring rain by Tuesday, alleviating the dry conditions.

One of the most significant wildfires, the Horry Fire, had consumed 1,600 acres by Sunday afternoon. This blaze is one of six major fires still active in South Carolina, as reported by the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

In Horry County, the raging fires have led to evacuations in eight neighborhoods. Local authorities are working around the clock to combat the fires, with support from the South Carolina Army National Guard. Soldiers have deployed two Blackhawk helicopters, which are dropping 600 gallons of water at a time to control the blazes.

The ongoing situation remains critical, with firefighting efforts intensifying to prevent further damage. Local officials are urging residents to stay informed and follow evacuation orders where necessary.
