Istanbul, April 5, 2025 – The Europe Today: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has clarified that no date has been finalized for a potential working visit to the United States, while affirming that diplomatic and economic dialogue between Ankara and Washington remains active.
Speaking to journalists in Istanbul on Friday, President Erdogan stated, “The exact time when the Turkish side will pay a working visit to the US has not yet been determined.” However, he emphasized that ministerial-level discussions will proceed in the meantime.
“Both my Foreign Minister [Hakan Fidan] and Trade Minister [Omer Bolat] may have meetings or travel plans related to the US,” Erdogan noted, pointing to ongoing economic discussions — particularly around tax regulations, a critical component of Türkiye’s efforts to strengthen trade ties with the U.S.
The President expressed cautious optimism about the current trajectory of U.S.-Türkiye relations, underscoring Ankara’s desire for American goodwill to translate into concrete steps, particularly in the economic sphere.
“We hope to see the positive approach they are considering toward Türkiye turn into concrete action,” Erdogan stated.
Renewed Engagement Despite Past Strains
Erdogan’s remarks come in the wake of a March 16 phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden, during which both leaders expressed interest in enhancing bilateral cooperation through “solidarity, a results-oriented approach, and sincerity.”
While relations between the two NATO allies have experienced tensions over issues including U.S. support for PKK/YPG groups, defense procurements, and differing regional policies, recent engagements suggest an effort to reset the tone of diplomacy.
Economic Cooperation in Focus
Türkiye is currently pursuing stronger foreign investment and broader trade agreements, particularly with major partners like the U.S. Economic topics — especially tax and regulatory alignment — have featured prominently in Ankara’s agenda, with Erdogan highlighting them as pivotal for future cooperation.
The forthcoming visits and discussions by senior Turkish ministers are viewed as steps to maintain momentum in the bilateral dialogue, even as the President’s own visit to Washington remains unscheduled.
Looking Ahead
As Türkiye continues its outreach to international partners, Erdogan’s administration is expected to prioritize economic diplomacy, focusing on regulatory harmonization and investment facilitation. The coming months may see increased engagement at ministerial levels — and possibly pave the way for a presidential visit once conditions are deemed favorable.
