Baku, August 25, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Sunday received Stephen Doughty, the United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories.
During the meeting, Stephen Doughty congratulated the Azerbaijani head of state on the historic results achieved in Washington regarding the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the advancement of the peace agenda. He reaffirmed the UK’s readiness to support this process and emphasized the importance of the outcomes reached in Washington concerning regional transport connectivity.
The UK minister also extended congratulations on Azerbaijan’s successful hosting of COP29 last year and the progress achieved in the global climate agenda.
President Ilham Aliyev thanked Doughty for his remarks and underlined that Azerbaijan remains committed to further advancing the peace agenda and normalization with Armenia. He also recalled the visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Azerbaijan during COP29 and their meeting held on that occasion.
The two sides reviewed the prospects for strengthening bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the current state of political cooperation. They noted broad opportunities for expanding ties in economic and trade sectors, information and communication technologies, education, and other fields. Particular emphasis was placed on energy cooperation, with both parties acknowledging the successful partnership between Azerbaijan and bp, which has flourished for more than three decades across conventional and renewable energy sectors. They voiced confidence that this mutually beneficial collaboration will continue in the coming decades.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Stephen Doughty presented a keepsake to President Ilham Aliyev.
