Toronto, September 21, 2025 — The Europe Today: Nearly 2,000 people marched through downtown Toronto on Saturday as part of nationwide protests urging the new Liberal government to prioritize climate action, Indigenous rights, migrant protections, and workers’ concerns ahead of the upcoming fall budget, media reports said.
Protesters voiced opposition to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s support for new fossil fuel projects and raised concerns over potential public service cuts. Demonstrators also highlighted broader issues, including Indigenous rights, anti-war activism, and economic inequality.
Organizers criticized the government’s agenda, stating in a release that it “pushes forward climate-destructive pipelines, continues the arming of Israel, and scapegoats migrants.”
Addressing the crowd in Sankofa Square before the march, Syed Hussan, organizer and spokesperson for the Migrants Rights Network, said: “We are building a common front because at this point, when we see the climate catastrophe that we are all facing, the world is on the brink of war because of the huge armaments that are being built up in most countries. So we need to take a stand here.”
The demonstration was coordinated by a coalition of 14 partner organizations representing movements for migrant justice, economic justice, Indigenous rights, anti-war advocacy, and climate justice. Similar protests took place across Canada, including in Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver, as well as in cities around the world.
Among the issues of concern for protest organizers are the Liberal government’s pledge to make significant cuts to federal program spending while simultaneously increasing allocations to the military budget.
