Islamabad, September 27, 2025 – The Europe Today: The “Remembrance Day” was commemorated in the Pakistani capital on Friday to pay tribute to the Azerbaijani military personnel who sacrificed their lives in the Patriotic War of 2020.

Organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Islamabad, the event was hosted at the Heydar Aliyev Auditorium of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) under the theme “27 September – Remembrance Day: The Great Heroism.”

The commemoration brought together Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan Khazar Farhadov, foreign envoys, Pakistani diplomats, former Federal Information Minister Mushahid Hussain Sayed, NUST Pro Rector Major General (R) Arif Malik, senior journalists, faculty members, and students.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Khazar Farhadov said September 27 symbolizes heroism and sacrifice, marking the start of the 44-day Patriotic War that restored Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity after nearly three decades of Armenian occupation. He emphasized that this victory not only upheld Azerbaijan’s sovereignty but also restored the rights of nearly one million displaced citizens. The envoy praised the courage of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev and expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its unwavering support during the conflict.

Highlighting Azerbaijan’s ongoing peace efforts, including the recent peace initiative with Armenia launched in Washington, Ambassador Farhadov underlined that sustainable peace and prosperity in the region can only be achieved through dialogue and cooperation. Paying tribute to the martyrs, he said their sacrifice paved the way for sovereignty, stability, and the future prosperity of the South Caucasus.

Former Federal Information Minister Mushahid Hussain Sayed, in his remarks, underscored the historic friendship between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, noting their consistent mutual support on the issues of Karabakh and Kashmir. He strongly criticized Western double standards in crises affecting Muslim nations and praised President Ilham Aliyev for his decisive leadership in liberating Azerbaijani territories. He also commended Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a prominent leader of the Muslim world.

Speaking on the occasion, NUST Pro Rector Major General (R) Arif Malik paid tribute to Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev, describing him as a visionary statesman. He highlighted the sacrifices made by both Pakistan and Azerbaijan in the fight against terrorism and pointed to the deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, defence, and education sectors.

Remembrance Day is observed annually on September 27 in Azerbaijan and across the globe to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Azerbaijani servicemen who gave their lives during the 44-day Patriotic War of 2020.
