Amman, January 25, 2026 – The Europe Today: Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Saturday directed the restructuring of the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) and the development of a comprehensive strategy and roadmap to achieve a structural transformation of the military over the next three years.
The directive was issued in a letter addressed to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Ahmed Al-Hunaiti and published by the Royal Hashemite Court.
In the letter, King Abdullah praised the Jordan Armed Forces as a national institution held in high esteem by Jordanians, commending officers, non-commissioned officers and personnel for their dedication, professionalism and role in safeguarding the Kingdom’s security and borders.
The king instructed military leadership to prepare a clear and comprehensive strategy, along with an implementation roadmap, to enable the armed forces to effectively confront current and future threats, rapid technological developments and the expanding operational environment.
He stressed the importance of reviewing modernization and restructuring requirements to ensure that the military’s organizational structure is aligned with diverse operational environments, modern warfare methods and the realities of hybrid and non-traditional conflicts.
King Abdullah said Jordan aspires to build agile, flexible and highly capable armed forces, equipped and trained in line with modern combat doctrines that ensure high readiness, professionalism and strategic deterrence.
He called for simplified and effective combat doctrines tailored to each service branch, supported by the optimal use of defensive and offensive capabilities. The king emphasized the need to protect strategic and operational centers of gravity and to enhance command, control and communications systems through partnerships among military directorates, research centers and local and friendly defense industries.
Highlighting future priorities, King Abdullah underscored the importance of achieving competitive advantage in selected operational domains, placing defensive and offensive cyber operations among key priorities, alongside investment in unmanned systems and artificial intelligence across all force levels.
The letter also called for maintaining sufficient reserve forces, strengthening logistical support systems to ensure supply chain sustainability, and studying the optimal integration of border guard units, the gendarmerie and special police forces into operational plans.
To advance defense manufacturing capabilities, the king directed the reorientation and strengthening of the Jordan Design and Development Bureau to serve as a central hub for research, development and production of advanced defense technologies in line with international standards.
He further instructed that the strategy include clear steps to restructure military-affiliated investment funds and companies in accordance with the highest standards of governance and professional management.
King Abdullah said he expects the proposed strategy and roadmap to be submitted for approval and immediate implementation, expressing full confidence in the leadership of the armed forces and pledging continued support for modernization efforts to safeguard Jordan’s security.
