New York, July 6, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Turkish Navy frigate TCG Oruc Reis represented Türkiye at international maritime events held in New York as part of the United States’ celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence.
The frigate, carrying a crew of 176 personnel, anchored on the Hudson River and is scheduled to remain in New York Harbor until July 8 before departing for Dublin.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, the vessel’s commanding officer, Captain Kemal Varli, said the deployment reflects the Turkish Navy’s high operational capability, professionalism, and ability to conduct joint missions alongside allied naval forces.
Varli noted that the frigate underwent a comprehensive modernization programme completed in 2025, incorporating domestically developed defence technologies, including advanced combat management, radar, electronic warfare, sensor, communications, and command-and-control systems.
He said the visit also underscores Türkiye’s active role within NATO and its continued contribution to international maritime security and cooperation.
More than 20 countries participated in the maritime celebrations, showcasing military and historic vessels as part of the commemorative events.
The TCG Oruc Reis, a Barbaros-class frigate, entered service with the Turkish Navy in 1997 and is scheduled to sail from New York to Dublin on July 8 following the conclusion of its participation in the celebrations.
