Ashgabat, August 02, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on Sunday hosted a conference dedicated to the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the resolution “Year of International Law, 2028,” an initiative put forward by Turkmenistan that was unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly on July 24.
The conference brought together senior officials and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, researchers and faculty members from the Turkmenistan Institute of State, Law, and Democracy, Magtymguly Turkmen State University, the International University for the Humanities and Development, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as university students.
Participants highlighted that the initiative was originally proposed by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov during his address at the anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he called for declaring 2028 as the Year of International Law.
The resolution was unanimously adopted during the 106th plenary meeting of the current session of the UN General Assembly, with the support of 78 co-sponsoring states, marking what officials described as a major achievement in Turkmenistan’s foreign policy.
Addressing the conference, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov underscored the international significance of the resolution and called for the active implementation of measures aimed at fulfilling its objectives.
He noted that a comprehensive package of implementation measures had already been presented to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov during the previous day’s Cabinet of Ministers meeting and received official approval.
The conference announced the launch of a series of initiatives to implement the resolution, including the preparation of a National Action Plan for 2026–2028 and the development of a National Concept on “International Law and the Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan.”
Participants emphasized that the adoption of the UN resolution reaffirms Turkmenistan’s steadfast commitment to the principles of statehood, justice, and the rule of law. Speakers also highlighted that the country’s policy of permanent neutrality, peaceful coexistence, and good-neighborly relations has strengthened its standing both regionally and internationally.
The conference further noted that, as a party to key international legal instruments, Turkmenistan continues to contribute to regional and global peace, stability, and security through its adherence to international law.
The event concluded with participants extending congratulations to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, on the successful adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution proclaiming 2028 as the Year of International Law.
