Rabat, August 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco and Jordan have signed an extradition convention aimed at strengthening judicial and legal cooperation between the two countries and enhancing the institutional mechanisms governing bilateral collaboration.
The agreement was signed in Rabat by Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi and Jordanian Minister of Justice Bassam Samir Chahada Al-Talhouni following discussions between the two delegations on expanding judicial cooperation, strengthening coordination and exchanging expertise in various areas related to the justice system.
The convention establishes a legal framework for extradition between Morocco and Jordan, setting out clear procedures for processing extradition requests in accordance with the national legislation and legal obligations of both countries.
The agreement is intended to facilitate cooperation between the competent authorities in cases involving the extradition of wanted or convicted individuals, while contributing to efforts to combat crime, strengthen the rule of law and improve the effectiveness of justice.
Ouahbi described the convention as an important step towards strengthening judicial cooperation between the two kingdoms. He said it reflects the shared determination of Morocco and Jordan to further develop the legal and institutional frameworks governing their cooperation.
He also stressed that the agreement would enhance coordination between the competent authorities of both countries and facilitate judicial cooperation in cases requiring close collaboration and joint action, while reinforcing mutual confidence between their legal and judicial institutions.
For his part, Al-Talhouni underscored the importance of the convention in consolidating legal and judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco. He highlighted the strong and longstanding relations between the two countries and stressed the importance of continuing efforts to develop cooperation mechanisms and exchange expertise in areas of common interest.
The latest agreement builds on broader efforts by Rabat and Amman to deepen judicial cooperation. In 2025, the two countries signed agreements concerning mutual legal and judicial assistance in criminal matters and the transfer of sentenced persons, aimed at strengthening information exchange, facilitating investigations and organising the transfer of wanted individuals in accordance with national and international legal frameworks.
The new extradition convention is expected to provide an additional legal instrument for addressing cross-border crime and further strengthening the judicial partnership between Morocco and Jordan.
