President Aliyev Calls for Swift Implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions

Bishkek, September 1, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has called for the development of effective mechanisms to ensure the swift implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Addressing the SCO Plus format meeting in Bishkek, Aliyev recalled that four UN Security Council resolutions adopted in 1993 concerning Azerbaijan were implemented three decades later, in 2023.

The Azerbaijani president said that, unfortunately, the United Nations played no role in the implementation of those resolutions, stressing that Azerbaijan restored its sovereignty and territorial integrity on its own.

“Four resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council in 1993 were implemented three years ago, 30 years later,” Aliyev said.

He emphasized the need to establish appropriate mechanisms that would facilitate the timely implementation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Aliyev said such mechanisms would contribute to strengthening the effectiveness of the international organization and enhancing its role in addressing conflicts and maintaining international peace and security.

The four Security Council resolutions adopted in 1993 were related to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.
