Shusha, September 12, 2026 – The Europe Today: A solemn ceremony marking Mexico’s Independence Day was held in Shusha with the participation of representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan, highlighting the growing political and diplomatic ties between Azerbaijan and Mexico.
The ceremony began with the national anthems of Mexico and Azerbaijan.
Addressing the gathering, Maria Victoria Romero Caballero, Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan, said the two countries were expanding political dialogue, strengthening institutional contacts and demonstrating mutual interest in exploring new opportunities for cooperation.
The ambassador noted that political dialogue and institutional relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico had developed significantly in recent years. She added that visits by Azerbaijani delegations to Mexico had provided fresh momentum to bilateral relations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, highlighted Mexico’s principled support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity during the period of occupation.
Hajiyev said Azerbaijan-Mexico relations are based on mutual respect and adherence to the norms and principles of international law. He stressed that Mexico’s firm support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity during the occupation had been of particular importance and constituted one of the strong foundations of bilateral relations.
He also highlighted the continuation of political consultations and dialogue between the two countries, noting that Azerbaijan and Mexico share common positions on a number of issues on the international agenda.
Hajiyev said that celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day for the second time in Shusha, Azerbaijan’s cultural capital, was laying the foundation for a new tradition in bilateral relations.
He noted that following the liberation of Azerbaijan’s territories from occupation, new cities and locations had emerged as venues for diplomatic activities, significantly enriching the country’s diplomatic geography. He invited diplomatic missions accredited in Azerbaijan to participate in similar initiatives in Shusha and other cities across the country.
The ceremony also featured traditional Mexican dances and performances showcasing Azerbaijan’s rich musical heritage, reflecting the cultural dimension of relations between the two countries.
Shusha has increasingly developed beyond its status as Azerbaijan’s cultural capital to become an important venue for diplomatic meetings and international events. The hosting of Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations, alongside national day events of other countries, further underscores the city’s growing political, cultural and diplomatic significance.
