Meredov, Lavrov Discuss Turkmen-Russian Relations and Regional Issues

Ashgabat, October 7, 2026 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in political, diplomatic and multilateral spheres.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday in the National Tourist Zone of Avaza.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of events taking place under Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2026.

The two foreign ministers exchanged views on the current state of Turkmen-Russian cooperation and discussed promising areas for further interaction.

Meredov and Lavrov underscored the importance of maintaining regular political and diplomatic dialogue and contacts, noting their contribution to further strengthening friendly and constructive relations between the two countries.

The sides also discussed a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Following the talks, both sides reaffirmed their interest in further developing bilateral cooperation and strengthening interaction within multilateral frameworks.

As part of the meeting, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry and Russia’s Foreign Ministry signed a Cooperation Programme for 2027–2028.

The programme envisages further development and expansion of interaction between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
