Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco’s House of Representatives has elected Ahmed Touizi of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) as its new speaker, marking a key development in the country’s parliamentary reorganisation following the September 23 legislative elections.
Touizi secured 220 votes, defeating Driss El Azami El Idrissi, the candidate of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), who received 59 votes. A total of 369 votes were cast, of which 279 were valid and 90 were declared invalid.
He succeeds Rachid Talbi El Alami of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), who previously served as speaker of the lower house of parliament.
The election follows the September 23 legislative polls, in which PAM emerged as the largest party in the House of Representatives, securing 97 seats.
Following the elections, Morocco’s political parties entered consultations to establish a new parliamentary majority. PAM joined the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) in forming the governing coalition.
Touizi previously served as president of PAM’s parliamentary group during the 2021–2026 legislative term. His political career also includes experience in regional administration and both chambers of Morocco’s parliament.
His election marks an important step in establishing the leadership of the new legislature and comes amid broader political changes following the latest parliamentary elections.
As speaker, Touizi will oversee the work of the House of Representatives, including its legislative proceedings and parliamentary functions, in accordance with Morocco’s Constitution and parliamentary rules. The new legislature is expected to address national development priorities and the challenges facing the country during the coming term.
