Jakarta, October 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia will host the summit of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation in 2027, after this year’s leaders’ meeting was postponed amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday.
The summit had originally been planned for April 2026 but was deferred after wide-ranging consultations among member states, in view of the instability and ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking at a press briefing in Jakarta, ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said Indonesia remains firmly committed to hosting the gathering next year. He explained that Indonesian officials are working with D-8 member states and the organization’s secretariat to agree on new dates that would allow the widest possible attendance. Preparations are also continuing among the relevant ministries at home, after which a proposed schedule will be put to President Prabowo Subianto for final approval.
The spokesperson emphasized that the delay of the leaders’ meeting would not stall Indonesia’s 2026–2027 chairmanship, noting that technical and ministerial-level programmes will proceed as planned. “It does not mean we are putting our chairmanship agenda on hold,” he said.
Indonesia is leading the bloc under the theme “Navigating Global Shifts: Strengthening Equality, Solidarity, and Cooperation for Shared Prosperity.” Over the course of the year, it has already hosted a series of related events, including preliminary policy dialogues, the D-8 Youth Dialogue in Surabaya, the D-8 Halal Expo in Jakarta and the D-8 Business Forum in Tangerang.
Founded in 1997 to promote economic cooperation among leading Muslim-majority developing nations, the D-8 brings together Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Türkiye, with Azerbaijan formally joining as a member in December 2024.
