Vietnam Achieves Top Four Finish at 2024 International Olympiad in Informatics

Hanoi, September 07, 2024, The Europe Today: Vietnam’s national team has secured a prestigious position among the top four countries at the 2024 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), following the United States, Japan, and Poland. This remarkable achievement was announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on Friday morning.

The Vietnamese team, consisting of four students, all won medals: two golds, one silver, and one bronze. These outstanding students hail from the High School for Gifted Students at the University of Natural Sciences, under Vietnam National University in Hà Nội.

The gold medals were awarded to Phạm Công Minh, a 12th grader, and Hoàng Xuân Bách, an 11th grader. The silver medal went to Nguyễn Hữu Tuấn, a 10th grader, while Phạm Ngọc Trung, a 12th grader, earned the bronze.

The 36th IOI was held in Alexandria, Egypt, from September 1 to 6, attracting 353 participants from 91 countries and territories. Additionally, nine students from Israel, Iran, and Germany participated online.

The competition spanned two official exam days, during which participants were tasked with solving three challenging programming problems within a five-hour time frame. The results were evaluated through an automated online system, with real-time score updates throughout the contest.

This year’s exam was particularly demanding, requiring participants to creatively and flexibly apply their programming knowledge. As countries invest more in their digital technology education, the competition at the IOI has become increasingly fierce.

Vietnam’s strong performance this year builds on its impressive results from the 2023 IOI, where the team ranked among the top nine countries, winning one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

The Ministry of Education and Training praised the students’ hard work and dedication, highlighting their success as a testament to the nation’s growing expertise in informatics and programming on the global stage.
