Belarusian President Lukashenko Arrives in Russia Ahead of CIS Summit

Moscow, October 07, 2024 – The Europe Today: Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived in the Russian Federation on a working visit, ahead of his participation in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Heads of State Council meeting, set to take place in Moscow on October 8, according to media reports.

The CIS summit will bring together leaders of member states to discuss a wide range of topics, including security, high technology, and cooperation in trade, economy, culture, and humanitarian affairs. President Lukashenko is also expected to attend several informal events during the summit.

According to the CIS Executive Committee’s press service, the heads of state will exchange views on deepening cooperation within the CIS and determine the presidency of the organization for 2025. A special address will be adopted, marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, paying tribute to the Soviet people’s triumph.

Additionally, the summit will address the activities of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly in promoting integration efforts and consider amendments to several agreements on legal cooperation and security matters. The heads of state are also expected to sign decisions designating the CIS Capitals of Culture for the next three years.

Meanwhile, on October 7, Moscow will host the CIS Foreign Ministers Council, where foreign ministers from the CIS member states will meet to discuss key regional and international issues ahead of the main summit.
