Prabowo Subianto to Meet Egypt’s El-Sisi and Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim During Overseas Tour

Jakarta, December 17, 2024 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his second overseas tour.

According to the official schedule, President Prabowo will hold a bilateral meeting with President el-Sisi on the sidelines of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation Summit in Cairo, Egypt, scheduled for December 17-19.

“I will hold a bilateral meeting with the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi,” Prabowo stated to reporters at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Tuesday.

President Prabowo underscored the significance of the forthcoming meeting, highlighting Egypt’s role as a regional power and its status as Indonesia’s strategic partner in the Middle East.

In addition to the bilateral engagements in Egypt, Prabowo revealed plans to hold informal meetings with key economic and industrial figures before proceeding to Malaysia for discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“After the summit, I will participate in unofficial meetings with economic and industry actors before proceeding to Malaysia to meet with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim,” he informed the media prior to his departure for Egypt.

President Prabowo departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base at 11:38 a.m. local time aboard the Republic of Indonesia airplane.

Earlier, on Monday (December 16), Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat announced that President Prabowo would represent Indonesia at the D-8 Summit to receive the organization’s chairmanship baton for the 2026-2027 period from Egypt.

“Indonesia will utilize the president’s presence to emphasize the role of D-8 in positively contributing to the Global South’s efforts to enhance cooperation,” Soemirat stated.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, comprising eight developing nations, aims to strengthen economic ties and development among its member countries.
