Beijing, January 1, 2025 – The Europe Today: China’s box office revenue reached over 42.5 billion yuan (approximately $5.91 billion) in 2024, according to a report released by the China Film Administration on Wednesday.
Strong Contribution from Domestic Films
Domestic productions accounted for over 33.4 billion yuan, representing 78.68 percent of the total box office revenue. Of the 79 movies that grossed over 100 million yuan, 55 were domestic films, highlighting the robust performance of China’s film industry in fostering local content.
Cinema Infrastructure Growth
In 2024, the country added more than 4,600 new cinema screens across its cities, bringing the nationwide total to an impressive 90,968 screens. This expansion underscores China’s commitment to growing its film industry infrastructure and improving access to cinemas for urban residents.
Record Moviegoer Visits
Urban cinemas recorded over 1 billion moviegoer visits last year, reflecting strong audience engagement and enthusiasm for both domestic and international films.
