Islamabad, May 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: As voting commenced for the Romanian presidential elections among the diaspora on Friday, polling station no. 713 in Pakistan’s capital hosted a unique civic moment. For the first time, children from the Romanian community in Pakistan participated in a symbolic voting exercise, choosing between two popular fruits — apples and oranges — in an initiative aimed at promoting civic education and healthy lifestyles.
The event, held at the Embassy of Romania in Islamabad, was marked by joy, curiosity, and civic spirit as the children, some on their way to school or kindergarten, stepped into a playful yet meaningful version of democracy.
Romanian Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Dan Stoenescu, explained the initiative’s dual purpose:
“Our goal was to promote civic responsibility from a young age while encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Through this educational activity, children learned the basics of voting and understood the importance of making wise choices for their health. Our message is simple: if even children can vote, then parents have no reason to stay passive when it comes to their family’s democratic future.”
The embassy created a welcoming and educational environment, complete with a miniature ballot box, illustrated voting papers featuring fruit options, and enthusiastic guidance from the embassy staff. The activity sparked conversations among children and parents alike about the value of democratic participation and balanced nutrition.
The results of the symbolic fruit election — apples vs. oranges — will be announced on Sunday evening, coinciding with the official presidential election results. The light-hearted “vote” aims to bring smiles, stimulate community engagement, and serve as a reminder that civic habits begin early.
The Embassy of Romania in Pakistan continues to encourage all Romanian citizens to exercise their right to vote and embrace a vibrant, democratic, and health-conscious lifestyle. As this initiative beautifully illustrates, civic engagement can start with simple, joyful gestures — even one as sweet as a child casting a vote for their favorite fruit.
