Milano

Rome, February 8, 2026 – The Europe Today: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday underscored the importance of shared Western values during a meeting in Milan with JD Vance, held ahead of the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics at the San Siro stadium.

Recalling their previous encounter, Meloni noted that the last time they met was in Rome for the inauguration of Pope Leo’s papacy. “Today we meet again for the opening ceremony of the Olympics,” she said, describing both occasions as symbols of the values that bind Europe and the United States.

“These are two events that tell the story of a system of values that hold Europe and the United States together, that hold the West together,” Meloni stated, adding that these shared principles form the basis of transatlantic cooperation, friendship, and the future both sides seek to build together.

The meeting was also attended by Marco Rubio and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. Meloni said the visit provided an opportunity not only to attend the Olympic opening ceremony but also to discuss bilateral relations and key international issues.

“Italy and the United States have always had very significant relations,” Meloni said. “We are working on strengthening our cooperation and on several international dossiers that are currently open.”

Vice President Vance praised Italy’s efforts in organizing the Winter Olympics, congratulating the host country on its preparations. “You have done an outstanding job with the Olympic Games,” he said. “The city is beautiful. We have great relationships, strong economic partnerships, and excellent connections.”

Vance also shared a personal note, saying that he and his wife had been eager to attend the Olympics since he became vice president, expressing satisfaction that the visit and preparations had gone well.

The meeting highlighted the continued strength of US–Italy relations and reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to close cooperation grounded in shared democratic and Western values.
