South Korea Dispatches Envoys to Secure Alternative Supply Routes Amid Middle East Crisis

South Korea

Seoul, April 14, 2026 – The Europe Today: Cho Hyun announced on Tuesday that South Korea has dispatched diplomatic envoys to Algeria and Libya, while preparing to send additional representatives to diversify supply routes in response to escalating disruptions in the Middle East.

The announcement came during a Cabinet meeting following directives from Lee Jae Myung, who urged the government to explore alternative supply chain options after the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran disrupted maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Minister Cho stated that director-general-level officials have already been deployed to Algeria and Libya, and efforts are underway to dispatch a special envoy to the Republic of the Congo. He added that the ministry is also considering sending presidential envoys in coordination with relevant government bodies, including the Korea Petroleum Association, to secure alternative energy supplies.

In parallel, Kang Hoon-sik has been sent to the Middle East as a special envoy to support diplomatic and strategic efforts in the region.

Cho further revealed that Chung Byung-ha is currently in Tehran engaging with senior Iranian officials. The discussions are focused on regional developments, ensuring the safety of South Korean nationals, and safeguarding maritime operations, including vessels and crew navigating the region.

The move reflects Seoul’s proactive approach to mitigating supply chain risks and maintaining energy security amid rising geopolitical tensions affecting global trade routes.
