Seoul, April 15, 2026 – The Europe Today: A high-level delegation of ambassadors from 30 member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization visited South Korea this week to advance discussions on defense cooperation and regional security, the foreign ministry announced on Tuesday.
The delegation, comprising members of the North Atlantic Council, is in Seoul from Monday to Wednesday. The visit aims to explore avenues for expanding cooperation between NATO and South Korea amid evolving global security challenges, including North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held talks with the delegation on Tuesday, while Vice Foreign Minister for diplomatic strategy and intelligence Jeong Yeon-doo led a detailed briefing on Seoul’s strategic priorities. The ministry also hosted a dinner bringing together NATO envoys and representatives from 13 South Korean defense companies.
During the engagements, both sides discussed strengthening cooperation in the defense industry and exchanged views on regional security developments, particularly the situation on the Korean Peninsula. They also emphasized the importance of expanding collaboration into emerging domains such as space and advanced technologies, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of security between the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions.
The delegation’s itinerary included visits to key defense industry facilities, where envoys observed South Korea’s advanced technological capabilities. The growing interest in South Korean defense systems comes as European nations seek to enhance military readiness and replenish stockpiles amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The foreign ministry noted that the visit is expected to broaden the scope of NATO–South Korea cooperation and support South Korean defense firms in expanding their footprint in European and transatlantic markets.
Defense ties between South Korea and NATO have strengthened in recent years, with increasing emphasis on arms industry partnerships and interoperability. European allies have shown heightened interest in South Korean military equipment, including tanks, howitzers, and air defense systems, valued for their cost-effectiveness and rapid delivery.
The discussions also come against the backdrop of wider geopolitical uncertainties, including tensions in the Middle East affecting global shipping routes. Several NATO members have expressed caution over deeper military involvement in the Strait of Hormuz, favoring diplomatic efforts to ensure stability and secure maritime passage.
