CIS Foreign Ministers Convene in Avaza to Strengthen Regional Cooperation

Avaza, October 8, 2026 – The Europe Today: The regular meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held on October 7, 2026, in the National Tourist Zone of Avaza, Turkmenistan.

The meeting was attended by heads of the foreign ministries of CIS member states and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

Participants exchanged views on pressing issues on the international and regional agenda and discussed key areas of cooperation within the CIS framework.

Particular attention was given to further developing multifaceted cooperation among CIS member states, strengthening foreign policy coordination and improving mechanisms for interaction.

In view of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the CIS in 2026, the participants reviewed topical issues related to the Commonwealth’s activities and considered preliminary results of the organization’s work during the year. They also highlighted the significance of the 35th anniversary of the CIS, being marked in 2026.

The meeting also addressed cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian spheres, tourism, physical culture and sports, youth affairs and other areas of mutual interest.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining constructive dialogue and consistently developing mutually beneficial cooperation among CIS member states.

Documents Signed to Advance CIS Cooperation

Following the meeting, a signing ceremony was held for a number of documents aimed at further developing and strengthening cooperation within the Commonwealth.

The documents included a Protocol Decision on holding the next meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS.

The participants also adopted a decision declaring 2029 the Year of Transport Connectivity of the Commonwealth in the CIS, following an initiative put forward by Turkmenistan.

Other documents signed included a decision on the draft Plan of Measures for organizing and preparing the Year of Legal Literacy in the CIS in 2027, as well as a decision on the Plan for Multilevel Political Consultations among the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of CIS member states.

The agreements are intended to enhance coordination, strengthen institutional interaction and promote practical cooperation among the countries of the Commonwealth.
