Turkmenbashi, October 8, 2026 – The Europe Today: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday that Russia had a “clear conscience” regarding the Ukraine peace talks held in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025.
Speaking at a news conference following a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Lavrov said Russia had fully accepted proposals put forward by the United States during the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
“Our conscience is clear. Moreover, we fully accepted the US proposals made in August 2025 during the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska,” Lavrov said.
He argued that Russia was not responsible for the subsequent failure to advance the understandings reached in Anchorage, attributing the development to what he described as intense pressure exerted by European countries on Washington.
“It is not our fault that the US side could not withstand the unprecedented and brazen pressure from Europe, which later proudly declared that it had ‘buried Anchorage,’” the Russian foreign minister said.
Lavrov urged journalists to direct questions concerning the developments surrounding the Anchorage talks to Western and Ukrainian officials whom he had referenced during his account of the negotiations.
The Russian foreign minister made the remarks as he participated in the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Turkmenistan, where officials also discussed international and regional developments and cooperation among CIS member states.
