Sofia, September 13, 2025 — The Europe Today: Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov has dismissed the latest vote of no confidence against his cabinet, describing the government and its critics as existing in “parallel realities and universes.” His comments came during celebrations marking the professional holiday of Bulgaria’s fire service.
Defending the Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate “Fire Safety and Population Protection,” Zhelyazkov praised their coordination and response to this year’s fires. “Our teams have demonstrated skill, coordination, and dedication to both our European partners and neighboring countries. We will defend their work, expertise, and honor against any unjust criticism,” he said.
The no-confidence motion — the fifth attempt to unseat the Zhelyazkov cabinet — was submitted by deputies from We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (WCC-DB) with backing from MECH and the APS. It targets alleged failures in domestic policy, security, and justice.
WCC-DB MP Bozhidar Bozhanov argued that the government is worsening the “conquered state” problem, which he said reflects a refusal to counter hidden power structures undermining democracy. Asen Vassilev, leader of WCC, accused the government of mismanaging public finances, claiming loans were being misappropriated due to weak rule of law. Atanas Atanasov (DB) added that the cabinet was exercising repressive powers that threatened internal security and public order.
This is the fifth no-confidence motion faced by the Zhelyazkov government. Previous efforts — launched by Revival, MECH, and Greatness — cited foreign policy, corruption, fiscal mismanagement, and ecological issues but all failed to secure enough votes.
Both Revival and Greatness have announced support for the current motion, which is set for debate in Parliament next week.
