Ottawa, November 22, 2025 – The Europe Today: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron held discussions on the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian situation in Gaza during a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in South Africa, the Canadian government announced on Saturday.
According to an official statement, the two leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine, underscoring that any resolution to the conflict must include Kyiv, safeguard Ukraine’s fundamental interests, and ensure credible security guarantees. Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s commitment to working closely with its allies to achieve what he described as a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine.
The leaders also exchanged views on the situation in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need to restore stability and accelerate reconstruction efforts to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Carney and Macron additionally discussed coordination within the Group of Seven (G7) as Canada concludes its presidency and France prepares to assume the role. The statement noted that Canada aims to strengthen bilateral ties with France through expanded cooperation and partnerships in sectors such as energy, defence, aerospace, technology, and critical minerals.
“Prime Minister Carney and President Macron agreed to remain in close contact and directed their officials to accelerate progress on the priorities discussed,” the government’s statement added.
