Shahbaz Sharif Elected as 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan in National Assembly Polls

Islamabad, March 03, 2024, The Europe Today: Shahbaz Sharif, the joint candidate of an alliance led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has been elected as the 24th Prime Minister of the country. The election took place in the National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament, on Sunday, as confirmed by the Speaker of the House, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq announced the victory of Sharif, who is also the President of PML-N, after securing an impressive 201 votes out of the total 293 cast in Sunday’s polling. Sharif’s sole competitor, Omar Ayub Khan, a joint candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, secured 92 votes, as disclosed by the Speaker.

The announcement came after a thorough counting process, during which it was revealed that Sharif surpassed the required majority of 169 votes in the 336-member National Assembly. The elected Prime Minister garnered support from various political factions, including PML-N, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, and other allies.

In a press conference following the announcement, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq officially declared Shahbaz Sharif as the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This momentous occasion follows the general election held on February 8, 2024, where the National Assembly elected Sadiq as the Speaker of the House and Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah as his deputy.

Shahbaz Sharif’s election is anticipated to usher in a new era for Pakistan, with expectations high for the implementation of robust policies and initiatives under his leadership. The diverse support garnered during the election reflects a united front among various political parties, signaling a collaborative effort towards the nation’s progress and development.
