Building Collapse in Mallorca Kills Four, Injures 21

Mallorca, May 24, 2024, The Europe Today: A building collapse on Spain’s Mediterranean island of Mallorca has resulted in the deaths of at least four people and left 21 others injured. The incident occurred when the roof of a restaurant in the Playa de Palma area, south of the island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca, collapsed around 8:30 p.m. local time (1830 GMT) on Thursday.

Emergency services reported that seven of the injured individuals are in “very serious” condition, while nine others sustained serious injuries. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue to search for potential survivors and assist the injured.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his concern on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “I am closely following the consequences of the terrible collapse that occurred on the beach of Palma,” Sanchez stated. He confirmed that he had been in contact with local and regional authorities and assured that the government is prepared to provide all necessary assistance, including deploying additional resources and personnel.

Mallorca, a part of Spain’s Balearic Islands, is a highly popular tourist destination, particularly during the summer season. This tragic accident occurs just as the island prepares for its peak tourist season, raising concerns about safety and emergency preparedness.

Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure that all safety protocols are followed to prevent future incidents. The local community and tourists alike are urged to stay clear of the affected area as emergency responders carry out their work.
