Obbürgen, June 11, 2024, The Europe Today: Leaders from nearly 90 countries and organizations are set to convene at the Bürgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne in Obbürgen, Switzerland, this weekend for a high-stakes Ukraine peace summit. Notably, Russia has not been invited to the event.
The summit, which aims to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, will be based on a 10-point peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in late 2022. Moscow has declined to attend, criticizing the agenda as being aligned with Zelenskyy’s proposals.
Swiss President Viola Amherd announced on Monday that approximately 160 invitations were sent out, with around 100 confirmations received thus far for participation in the initial phase of the peace process.
Key figures expected to attend include German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. However, US President Joe Biden will not be in attendance.
Swiss authorities anticipate the final list of participants to be confirmed by Friday. While several prominent developing countries such as Turkey, South Africa, and Brazil have yet to confirm their attendance, it has been confirmed that India will participate, though the level of representation remains unclear.
The summit marks a significant diplomatic effort to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, bringing together global leaders to discuss and potentially advance peace initiatives.
