Midfielder Rihito Yamamoto scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute. Mali had a chance to equalize with a stoppage-time penalty, but forward Moussa Diakite missed his effort.
In an earlier match, Spain triumphed over the Dominican Republic 3-1. Despite being down to 10 men, the Dominican Republic managed to level the score in the first half through Angel Montes.
