Catania, August 05, 2024, The Europe Today: Volcanic activity from Mount Etna caused significant disruptions to air travel in Sicily on Sunday. A cloud of ash and smoke from the active volcano led to the suspension of flights at Catania airport for much of the day.
Flight Disruptions
The restrictions were lifted in the late afternoon, but the airport authorities warned passengers of “possible delays and cancellations” due to the earlier suspension. Catania airport, a crucial hub for the eastern part of Sicily, serves millions of passengers annually, connecting them to popular tourist destinations such as Syracuse and Taormina.
Ongoing Volcanic Activity
Mount Etna has exhibited intense activity in recent weeks, with frequent eruptions since early July. On Sunday, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported a “lava fountain” emanating from the volcano, adding to the ongoing volcanic activity.
The airport previously suspended all flights twice last month due to volcanic ash covering the runways. Despite the near-constant activity of Europe’s highest volcano, standing at approximately 3,324 meters (about 10,900 feet), casualties from eruptions at this UNESCO World Heritage Site are rare. However, in 1987, a sudden explosion near the summit resulted in the deaths of two tourists.
Safety and Precautions
Authorities continue to monitor Mount Etna’s activity closely. Travelers passing through Catania airport are advised to stay updated on flight statuses and potential delays or cancellations.
As Mount Etna continues its frequent eruptions, the local community and visitors are reminded of the volcano’s powerful presence and the need for caution in the surrounding areas.
