Italy's Third Heat Wave Expected to Persist Until July 20

Rome, July 11, 2026 – The Europe Today: Italy is bracing for its third major heat wave of the summer, with meteorologists forecasting that the prolonged spell of extreme temperatures will continue until July 20, bringing scorching conditions across much of the country and prompting renewed health warnings.

According to weather forecasters, temperatures are expected to remain well above seasonal averages, with inland areas of Sardinia likely to experience highs of up to 43°C, while several central and southern regions continue to endure intense daytime heat and unusually warm nights.

Italy’s Ministry of Health has issued red heat alerts for several cities, including Florence and Perugia, indicating conditions that pose a serious risk to public health, particularly for older adults, children, and people with chronic illnesses. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The prolonged heat wave is being driven by a powerful African anticyclone, which has brought persistent hot and dry air across southern Europe. Meteorologists warn that the continued high temperatures could increase the risk of wildfires, strain electricity demand, and place additional pressure on public health services.

Italy is among several European countries experiencing another episode of extreme summer weather, as climate experts continue to warn that heat waves across the continent are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting, and more intense due to climate change.
