Astana, September 03, 2024, The Europe Today: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a decree to hold a national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant on October 6, 2024. This decision was announced by the Akorda press service and reported by NHC.
The decree, issued in accordance with sub-paragraph 10 of Article 44 of the Constitution and Article 18 of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan on republican referendums, mandates that the referendum will determine public opinion on the proposed construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.
The Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan, along with the government and central state and local executive bodies, have been tasked with organizing and conducting the referendum. The decree is effective immediately upon its signing.
This initiative follows President Tokayev’s announcement during his state-of-the-nation address, in which he emphasized the importance of involving the public in decisions regarding significant national projects. The referendum will provide Kazakh citizens with the opportunity to voice their opinions on the nuclear power plant proposal, reflecting the government’s commitment to democratic engagement on major developmental issues.
