Bishkek, September 06, 2024, The Europe Today: Former Kyrgyz leader Askar Akayev has formally requested the Kyrgyz Parliament to restore his status as ex-president. The Parliament’s press service confirmed the receipt of the letter, which was submitted on September 5, according to MP Cholpon Sultanbekova.
While the issue has not yet been added to the parliamentary agenda, discussions are expected to take place among faction leaders and deputies before any decision is made. “First, there will be talks with the factions, their leaders, and deputies. After that, we will inform when this issue will be put on the agenda,” Sultanbekova stated.
Akayev, who governed Kyrgyzstan from 1990 until 2005, was ousted during the Tulip Revolution on March 24, 2005, amid protests against his administration’s alleged authoritarianism and corruption. Following his overthrow, Akayev fled to Russia, where he has lived in exile ever since.
The request to restore Akayev’s ex-presidential status is expected to generate debate within the Kyrgyz political landscape, given the historical significance of his presidency and subsequent ousting.
