Putin Announces Mass Production of Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile System

Moscow, November 23, 2024 – The Europe Today: Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed the decision to commence mass production of the Oreshnik ballistic missile system, a cutting-edge military advancement that recently saw its first combat deployment in Ukraine.

Speaking during a Kremlin meeting with senior Defense Ministry officials and defense industry representatives, Putin described the Oreshnik system as a fully modern development rather than a revamped Soviet-era weapon. Utilizing advanced hypersonic technology and modern materials, the missile system reflects Russia’s focus on contemporary defense capabilities.

“This is a product of New Russia, developed to meet present-day defense requirements,” Putin emphasized, adding that the missile system has already demonstrated its strategic value.

Successful Deployment in Ukraine

The Oreshnik missile was first used in combat earlier this week to target Yuzhmash, a significant Ukrainian defense facility in Dnepropetrovsk. The facility, a key manufacturer of missile and weapons systems since the Soviet era, was reportedly hit in response to Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied long-range weaponry, including American ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Oreshnik system achieved precise strikes during its initial deployment, with all warheads reaching their intended targets. The president commended the system’s performance, describing it as a critical addition to Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces.

Production and Strategic Integration

Putin confirmed that several Oreshnik systems are currently undergoing testing and that the infrastructure for serial production is already in place. Deliveries to Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces are expected to begin within months.

“This decision is final. Production is organized, and the system will soon be integrated into our military arsenal,” Putin stated.

Enhancing Defense Capabilities

Designed as a medium-range, hypersonic weapon, the Oreshnik system is tailored for high-precision strikes, adding a new dimension to Russia’s military capabilities. The missile’s development was fast-tracked to address evolving strategic needs and counter adversarial technologies.

Putin stressed the importance of continued testing and accelerated production to bolster Russia’s defense readiness. “I congratulate the military on the successful tests and support the system’s swift adoption into service,” he concluded.

The Oreshnik missile system is poised to play a pivotal role in Russia’s strategic defense posture, reflecting the nation’s commitment to maintaining technological superiority in modern warfare.
