Indonesia Reaffirms Aspiration to Join OECD and BRICS at World Governments Summit

Jakarta, February 14, 2025 – The Europe Today: President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other key economic cooperation forums, including BRICS.

Speaking via video conference at the World Governments Summit on Thursday, President Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s adherence to the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, advocating for equality, self-determination, and sovereignty in its international engagements.

“This approach guides Indonesia’s participation in many international organizations. Not only BRICS, we also apply to join the OECD, CPTPP, and the Indo-Pacific Forum, advocating for dialogue among equals, rather than adversaries,” Prabowo stated.

He reaffirmed Indonesia’s longstanding free and active foreign policy, which ensures the country does not align itself with any particular power. Indonesia, he noted, has maintained balanced relations with both the United States and China while safeguarding its sovereignty and independence.

“We strive to listen as much as we speak, forging partnerships based on trust and mutual respect,” Prabowo remarked. He further outlined Indonesia’s vision of strengthening its role in regional stability and development while serving as a bridge between the Global North and the Global South to promote peace, cooperation, and economic stability.

Prabowo underscored the necessity of domestic progress to bolster Indonesia’s global influence. “To be an effective actor on the global stage, we must keep our own house in order. Our international influence and ability to contribute meaningfully to global stability are linked to our own strength, resilience, economic progress, and the social welfare of our nation and our people,” he emphasized.

He also highlighted Indonesia’s potential as a modern and advanced nation, given its abundant natural resources and economic prospects.

The World Governments Summit is an annual high-level conference hosted by the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. It gathers leaders from various countries alongside key international institutions, including the United Nations (UN), the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as representatives from civil society organizations, industry, and the private sector.

The summit, first held in 2013, serves as a platform for global policymakers to exchange insights on governance, economic development, and international cooperation. This year, Indonesia’s delegation was led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
