Italian President Mattarella Condemns Russia’s Nuclear Rhetoric During Hiroshima Visit

Hiroshima, March 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: Italian President Sergio Mattarella, during his state visit to Japan, strongly criticized Russia’s nuclear rhetoric and its impact on global security while addressing survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings on Saturday.

“The Russian Federation has become the promoter of a renewed and dangerous nuclear narrative,” Mattarella stated, highlighting Moscow’s obstruction of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its withdrawal from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. He warned that Russia’s approach threatens to normalize nuclear weapons as tools of conflict, despite their inevitable path to total destruction.

Emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts, the Italian President remarked, “Strategic dialogue has, so far, prevented a new nuclear holocaust.” He urged global powers to prevent confrontational policies from leading to catastrophic consequences.

Mattarella further warned of the growing threats posed by expanding nuclear arsenals, asserting that their purpose appears to be “aggression and domination, not defense.” His remarks in Hiroshima—a city that endured the horrors of nuclear warfare—underscore Italy’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and global peace.
