Oslo, May 5, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia and Norway have signed a landmark Letter of Intent (LoI) aimed at deepening environmental diplomacy and intensifying joint efforts in tackling climate change, preserving ecosystems, and promoting sustainable development.
According to a statement issued by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry on Sunday, the agreement was formalized during a working visit to Oslo by Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who signed the LoI alongside Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.
“Strengthening the implementation of carbon economic values is vital for Indonesia to achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets,” Minister Nurofiq stated, highlighting the significance of this cooperation in supporting Indonesia’s climate agenda.
The two nations have jointly advanced a comprehensive carbon trading framework designed to bolster national climate objectives. The newly signed LoI marks a pivotal milestone in accelerating global climate action and fostering sustainable practices worldwide.
The agreement encompasses a broad range of collaborative commitments, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, good governance in environmental management, conservation of biodiversity, protection of peatland and mangrove ecosystems, waste management, and the development of a circular economy.
The Indonesian Environment Ministry emphasized that the agreement reflects the urgency of coordinated international climate action and underscores Norway’s role as a strategic partner in addressing the environmental challenges confronting Indonesia and the world.
Minister Nurofiq’s visit also commemorated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Norway, first established in 1950 with a long-standing focus on environmental collaboration.
Since 2022, Norway has pledged financial support of US$216 million to assist Indonesia in reducing emissions from the forestry and land use (FOLU) sector—a cornerstone of Indonesia’s climate strategy.
In addition to signing the LoI, Minister Nurofiq met with Andreas Motzfeld Kravik, State Secretary of Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and visited TOMRA, a leading recycling technology firm, to observe innovations in waste management and the implementation of circular economy models.
The partnership reinforces the mutual commitment of both countries to a greener, more sustainable future through shared knowledge, innovation, and concrete action.
