Beijing, June 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Thursday evening, during which the two leaders discussed the future trajectory of China–U.S. relations and the implementation of key agreements reached in Geneva.
President Xi emphasized the crucial role of leadership in guiding the development of bilateral ties. He likened China–U.S. relations to a “giant ship,” stating that recalibrating its course requires the two presidents to take the helm and steer it toward stability and cooperation, while avoiding disruptions and distractions.
Referring to the recent economic and trade consultations held in Geneva at the request of the U.S. side, President Xi noted that the meeting represented a constructive step forward in resolving long-standing issues through dialogue. He stressed that the talks were welcomed by both societies and the broader international community, reaffirming that “dialogue and cooperation is the only right choice.”
President Xi underlined the need to effectively utilize the existing economic and trade consultation mechanisms to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes based on equality and respect for each side’s core concerns. He reaffirmed China’s sincerity and commitment to the process, while also asserting that the country will stand firmly by its principles.
Highlighting China’s consistent track record of honoring its commitments, President Xi urged both sides to fully implement the agreements reached in Geneva. He confirmed that China has been seriously and earnestly executing its obligations and called on the United States to recognize the progress made and lift unilateral measures that negatively affect China.
He further proposed enhancing communication across key areas including foreign affairs, economy and trade, military, and law enforcement in order to build mutual understanding, address misperceptions, and strengthen cooperation.
On the Taiwan issue, President Xi reiterated that it must be handled with great caution. He warned that allowing separatist forces advocating “Taiwan independence” to provoke tensions risks dragging both countries into dangerous confrontation. He urged the United States to maintain its commitment to the One-China policy and act prudently to safeguard peace and stability.
President Trump expressed deep respect for President Xi and underscored the significance of the U.S.–China relationship. He said the United States welcomes a strong and prosperous Chinese economy and believes that U.S.–China cooperation has the potential to achieve great results.
He affirmed that the United States will adhere to the One-China policy, and described the Geneva meeting as a successful and productive dialogue that resulted in a beneficial agreement for both sides. Trump confirmed the U.S. commitment to working with China to implement the terms of that agreement.
President Trump also expressed strong support for continued educational exchange, saying that the United States values Chinese students studying in America.
President Xi extended an invitation to President Trump to visit China once again, which Trump warmly appreciated. The two leaders agreed that their respective teams should press ahead with the implementation of the Geneva accord and arrange a follow-up meeting at the earliest opportunity.
The phone call underscored a shared commitment to maintaining high-level communication, managing differences responsibly, and advancing cooperation to benefit both nations and contribute to global stability.
