Russian Doctors Develop Experimental Blood-Filtering Approach for Alzheimer’s Disease

Moscow, August 20, 2026 — The Europe Today: Russian doctors have developed and tested what they describe as a novel treatment strategy for Alzheimer’s disease that uses blood filtration to target chronic inflammation believed to contribute to damage to brain cells.

According to Russia Today, the approach is based on the removal of inflammatory components from the blood. Researchers believe that reducing chronic inflammation could help address one of the biological processes associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder and the most common form of dementia. It gradually affects memory, thinking and other cognitive functions, eventually impairing a person’s ability to carry out everyday activities independently.

The Russian researchers’ approach focuses on inflammation rather than directly targeting amyloid plaques, which have traditionally been one of the principal targets of Alzheimer’s research. The technique is intended to reduce harmful inflammatory activity circulating in the bloodstream and potentially limit its effects on the brain.

The development comes amid growing international efforts to identify treatments that can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Recent research has increasingly explored approaches beyond amyloid, including therapies targeting tau proteins and other mechanisms involved in neuronal damage.

A 2026 review of Alzheimer’s treatments noted that newer disease-modifying therapies, including anti-amyloid antibodies, have demonstrated an ability to reduce amyloid plaques and slow cognitive deterioration, while research into non-amyloid targets continues to expand.

Russian researchers have also reported clinical research into other potential Alzheimer’s treatments. A study published in Scientific Reports in May 2026 evaluated DMB-I (latrepirdine) in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s dementia and reported improvements on several cognitive and functional measures, with the 60 mg daily dose selected for further study.

The newly reported blood-filtering strategy remains an experimental approach and will require further clinical investigation to establish its effectiveness, safety and potential role in routine Alzheimer’s treatment.

If confirmed through larger and independently evaluated studies, the approach could add another avenue to the growing range of strategies being explored to slow or modify the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
